Tony Winners and Nominations for Broadway 2016: My Ballot/Predictions
Nominations for the 2016 American Theatre Wing’s Tony Awards®
At the end of May, the Tony Award nominations were announced for the Broadway theatre season 2016, and I was holding my breath for each category as the rolled them out starting at 8:30am.
There were a number of surprises, such as the record breaking 16 nominations for Hamilton and the sad few nominations received by Tuck Everlasting, (only one for Gregg Barnes/Costume Design) . Surprised that Waitress only got 4 nominations, but happy for Bright Star that received 5. Not bothered at all that American Psycho only got 2, I didn’t really care for it at all, same with single nominees, Disaster!, Therese Raquin, Hughie, On Your Feet!, Misery, and Dames at Sea. Glad for the strong but small group of great original plays, King Charles III (with 5), Eclipsed and The Humans (with 6), and The Father (with 2). Very pleased for Roundabout’s She Loves Me (with 8) and Noises Off (with 5), and Ivo’s Arthur Miller plays, The Crucible (with 4) and A View from the Bridge (with 5). The revivals of Fiddler… (3), Spring Awakening (3), Long Day’s Journey… (a magnificent 7), The Color Purple (4), and Blackbird (3) should all be quite pleased with themselves, as should the surprise of School of Rock (4) and Shuffle Along… (with a shocking and spectacular 10). Congrats to them all.
Over the last month, I separated the categories for discussion before the big night on Sunday, June 12th. Hopefully you had a chance to read the Five Part breakdown. If not, here are my picks for who will win (👉) and who I loved the most (❤️)and after I’ll add who did win (🏆). They actually might not match the ones I wrote about in the five part series, sometimes as the other awards come in, my mind changes. So here goes:
I got 16 correct. Not bad, but not great, especially compared to last year when I only got one wrong…

And the winners are….
I predicted 16/24 correctly. Not great, compared to last year when I only got one wrong, and this in the year of #Hamilton, which made it easy (and sometimes difficult to pick) but here ya go:
