Tony Awards 2018 – Nominations, Predictions, and Winners

The beautiful and subtle musical The Band’s Visit, which transferred to Broadway last fall from the Atlantic Theater Company Off-Broadway, was the hands-down biggest winner at the 72nd Annual Tony Awards, which were presented June 10 at Radio City Music Hall. The intimate little musical composed by David Yazbek and playwright Itamar Moses, based on a 2007 film by Eran Kolirin tells the gloriously engaging tale of a band of lost Egyptian police band musicians that find themselves in a remote village in the Israeli desert. Embraced and taken in by the town’s residents, the musical exudes inclusion and acceptance with a casual non-political ease, and surprised many by winning a total of ten Tony Awards last night. Most thought it would win Best Musical, Best Original Score, and an acting award for the female lead, the glorious Katrina Lenk. But few expected the landslide that happened last night, winning also awards for Best Book, Best Direction (David Cromer), Best Orchestrations (Jamshied Sharifi), Best Sound Design (Kai Harada), Best Lighting Design (Tyler Micoleau), and acting awards for these first time Tony winners: Tony Shalhoub, and Ari’el Stachel for their performances as musicians whose lives are changed in subtle and profound ways over the course of one evening.

The London-born super-show, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a two-part theatrical event that opened at Broadway’s Lyric Theatre in April was also a big winner, taking home six awards including Best Play.

The production also earned Best Direction for John Tiffany and swept all of the creative awards winning Best Costume Design (Katrina Lindsay), Best Scenic Design (Christine Jones), Best Lighting Design (Neil Austin), and Best Sound Design (Gareth Fry).

The National Theatre’s acclaimed Broadway transfer of Tony Kushner’s epic play about AIDS, Angels in America, which was the most-nominated play in Broadway history, won the Tony for Best Revival of a Play, in addition to acting awards for Nathan Lane and Andrew Garfield.
