The Queen is Dead, Long Live King Charles III

When the house lights dimmed, I wondered, which direction is this play going to go. I knew the concept was an alternate universe scenario; a set up that the Queen of England, my Queen (I’m Canadian), the ever-lasting Queen Elizabeth, has died. And Prince Charles (Tim Pigott-Smith), who has had a lifetime of hanging around the edges, is now the King. Here is where Mike Bartlett’s play, King Charles III begins, dramatically with candles and a choral requiem. But the question remains, where are they planning on taking this? All the real life characters are there: Camilla (Margot Leicester), William (Oliver Chris), Harry (Richard Goulding), and Kate (Lydia Wilson), all perfectly cast, looking the part, and setting the scene, along with various politicians, Londoners, and palace employees.
