Olivier Award Winners 2017

by Ross

In a telling tale for what’s in store for Broadway, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child dominated this year’s Olivier Awards winning nine of the eleven categories it was nominated in. Will the show repeat its success over here next year? One can only imagine.

The winners of this year’s awards were announced at the Royal Albert Hall in London last night, hosted by actor and comedian Jason Manford. Performing at the awards show were Dreamgirls star Amber Riley, the cast of School of Rock, and a special performance from Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes. Audra McDonald, a New York City favorite, performed “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” during the show’s In Memoriam section.

The Oliver awards won by Harry Potter include Best New Play, Best Actor (Jamie Parker) Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Anthony Boyle), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Noma Dumezweni) and Best Director (John Tiffany). In the not surprising category, the play also won all four design categories (Best Lighting Design, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Design and Best Set Design).

Tim Minchin’s Groundhog Day picked up awards for Best New Musical and Best Actor in a Musical (Andy Karl), which adds to the suspense of this years Tony Awards. Nominations will be announced for the Tonys, Drama Desk, and Outer Circle Critics in the upcoming weeks as this season comes to a close later this month. Will it be a surprise challenge to the force that is called Dear Evan Hansen or the underdog, Come From Away? My review of Groundhog Day will be posted on opening night, next week.

Amber Riley won the award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance as Effie White in Dreamgirls adding to the much talked about possible return of this classic show to Broadway with Riley reprising her now Award winning performance.

Not in competition this year for a Tony, School of Rock won the award for Outstanding Achievement in Music. Jesus Christ Superstar won the award for Best Musical Revival.

Billie Piper took home the award for Best Actress for her role in Yerma, which also won Best Revival. Piper won over the likes of Glenda Jackson, Cherry Jones, and Ruth Wilson, so she should be even more proud.

Matthew Bourne won for both the Best Family and Entertainment and Best Theatre Choreographer awards for The Red Shoes.  Best New Comedy went to Our Ladies Of Perpetual Succour, Tim Minchin won Best New Musical for Groundhog Day.

Kenneth Branagh won the Special Award, recognising his outstanding contribution to British theatre. Click here for a review of his Romeo and Juliet, seen last summer on the Frontmezzjunkies London Theatrical Tour of 2017.
